The Problem of Evil: Can the Evil in the World be Reconciled With the Existence of an All-Powerful, All-Good God?
For the three great religions of the Western world, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the problem of evil has always been one of the most difficult theological issues. God is all-powerful; therefore, whatever God wills is done. And God is perfectly good. Unlike the old Greek and Roman conceptions of deities, God is free from moral vices. But if God is perfectly good and also omnipotent, how could there be (so much!) suffering in the world? For Jews, the problem became even more significant in light of the Holocaust. In this session we shall examine the problem of evil and the major attempts to resolve it.
